The beer for work program helps alcoholics increase their dignity. For chronic alcoholics it is very hard to give up alcoholism and due to this bad habit they usually are not focused on life and work. They feel like their life is useless. They spend all of their money and time consuming alcohol, and they are usually frowned upon in the open public area. The beer for work program gives alcoholics some work and meaning to their life. They do some work and receive beer as a stipend. The beer for work program provides alcoholists with jobs to clean the streets. Cleaning the city makes them feel proud about themselves, as they are part of the community and doing something good to help it. Higgins (2013), writes about an alcoholic Mr. Ramon Smits, who works in the beer for work program. He writes that Mr. Ramon Smits, prior to joining the beer for work program, used to drink a lot of strong alcohol everyday, but now he only drinks beer. This program not only helped Mr Smits to reduce alcohol consumption but also made him feel good about himself, as he did the cleaning job and made his community clean. This job also kept Mr Smits out of trouble, as he stays busy with his job and does not get into drunken fights like other alcoholics. The people who used to frown on the alcoholics now greet them with smiles because they are keeping their city clean. The example for Mr Smits, who joined the beer for work program, successfully shows that the program can definitely help alcoholics find their pride again.
