Writing two paragraph

 Writing two paragraphs:

From now on, in your writing assignments, you will write two paragraphs about one prompt. Each paragraph will respond to the same prompt with a different controlling idea.  Then you will develop each paragraph by giving general and specific support about the controlling idea. You will follow the same format as you did in WA# 1.

 

You want to include some type of transition between the two paragraphs to show that they are related to each other. See my examples about gender inequality. Notice that the topics sentences respond to the prompt and have their own controlling idea. 

 

For example:

Prompt: Is there gender inequality in your native country?

● Paragraph #1 topic sentence:

There is gender inequality in the U.S. in how men and women are treated differently in the workplace.

● Paragraph #2 topic sentence:

Another type of gender inequality in the U.S. happens in homes in the expected roles of husbands and wives.

 

Or: Along with different treatment at work, men and women in the US also suffer from gender inequality in the home in their expected roles of husbands and wives.

 

Or: A second type of gender inequality in the US has to do with expected roles of husbands and wives in the home. 

 

Or: Not only is there gender inequality at work in the US, but it can also be found in homes with the expected roles of husbands and wives.

 

 

 

 

Practice: Figure out a topic sentence for the second paragraph in each example. Make sure that you use a transition phrase to show that the paragraphs are connected to each other.

 

Prompt: Why did you choose De Anza College?

● Paragraph #1 topic sentence: 

One reason I chose De Anza College is its high transfer rate.

 

● Paragraph #2 topic sentence:

 

Prompt: How is your smartphone a necessity in your daily life? 

● Paragraph #1 topic sentence: 

My smart phone helps me get to new places easily, so it is crucial for my day-to-day life. 

 

● Paragraph #2 topic sentence:
